Medical Emergency South Korea: A Personal Experience

This article is up to date as of January 2024.

Imagine you, a non-Korean citizen,

falling ill unexpectedly in South Korea and needing medical attention.

Even on holidays.

So, what steps should you take?

Let me share the experience of a friend who found themselves in this situation.

During his visit to South Korea, my friend developed inflammation under his fingernails.

Anticipating it would improve on its own, he waited, but it worsened, becoming red, swollen, hot, and intensely painful.

While we were traveling to Gyeongju and Busan, we initially visited a pharmacy.

The pharmacist, upon providing anti-inflammatory medicine, advised,

"If the pain and condition persist after a day of taking this medicine, you should go to the hospital."

As it was a Saturday, we took the train to Seoul and then back to Incheon.

Worried that he might require major surgery,

I discovered that there is a hospital at Incheon Airport open on Sundays

- the Inha University Airport Medical Center in the Teminal 1 (B1)

Upon visiting, he received treatment (his finger was pricked, and pus was drained),

and a prescription for antibiotics was provided.

The treatment fee amounted to about 60,000 won, and the medicine cost was 30,000 won.

Unfortunately, an English medical certificate couldn't be issued (only available in Korean).

However, given the urgency, we opted for it.
The doctor spoke English, offering detailed guidance.

Additional information:
