#Exploring the Hidden Hakmatek Waterfall: A Journey Off the Map

 

While it's possible to find your way to the Hakmatek Waterfall on your own, please note that there is currently no route available on Google Maps. To reach the waterfall, I first visited the local village, Hakmatek, and sought permission from their leader, Xepi, to enter the area. I parked my motorbike in front of a kiosk near the school. Before returning to my accommodation, I gave one dollar to the girl at the kiosk as a token of appreciation for keeping my helmets safe. You can also purchase water or snacks there.

With the assistance of two young locals, I was able to reach the waterfall in less than 30 minutes from the village. However, on my way back, I decided to take a different route and asked the guys to guide me. It took me less than an hour to walk, passing through the village, and it was a pleasant experience to interact with the locals and appreciate the beautiful mountainous landscape.

On the way to the waterfall, I was delighted to see an abundance of coffee trees. As I walked, I even stumbled upon some palm civet coffee beans on the ground. It was fascinating to witness the natural process behind this unique and sought-after coffee variety.

Similarly, on my way back near the village, I was treated to the sight of two vibrant green lorikeets. Their melodic songs echoed through the surroundings, filling the air with their lively tunes. It was a delightful encounter with these beautiful birds, and their vibrant presence added to the overall charm of the journey.

I strongly recommend wearing good hiking shoes for this excursion. The path can be wet, slippery, and uneven. Although the waterfall appears to be deep, the locals assured me that swimming is possible. It's also advisable to wear long pants as the area is filled with tall grass and thorn bushes.

After the hike, I expressed my gratitude for their assistance and wanted to compensate them. When I inquired about the guide fee, one of the guys suggested a payment of 50 dollars. Considering the two hours of guidance, I felt this amount was excessive, so I gave them 20 dollars, which I believed to be fair enough.

Note: It's always a good practice to respect local customs and seek permission before entering certain areas. Additionally, negotiation of fees may vary depending on the situation and cultural norms, so it's essential to consider these factors during your own visit.
